On February 15th, ODC Executive Director Thy Try and Editor Ly Vongseng, participated in BarCamp Kampot. As with previous BarCamp events, the conference in Kampot featured a host of presentations by IT professionals, businesses, NGOs and students on a wide range of topics.

Meanwhile, the ODC team gave a presentation on “How to Improve English & Stay Current with National and International Events through Online News Media” to a packed room of nearly 50 “BarCampers”. Most of the attendees were college students living in Kampot province. The presentation discussed ways to improve English comprehension through news media. Alternative news sources, emerging media platforms and Google Translate were demonstrated as effective tools to facilitate the learning process. ODC website was also presented as a free resource for learning English, in addition to monitoring development trends and obtaining key data for research.  In particular, the ODC presenters used Forest Cover and Elections Pages, both available in Khmer and English, to demonstrate how these pages could be used to improve users’ language skills.

Participants took a great interest in the presentation. They were curious to learn more about ODC, and said they would use the ODC website as a resource to learn English and stay up to date with new development in Cambodia.

The ODC team is planning to attend the next BarCamp event, which is scheduled to take place in March.
